BEST TIME FOR PHOTOS

One of the most common question from wedding couples is when is the best time to take photos?

Everyone wants beautiful wedding photos but it makes such a difference if you take your photos at the right time of day. Without a doubt, the answer to the question is the one hour prior to sunset.

This is known as ‘Golden Hour’.

WHAT IS THE GOLDEN HOUR?

The golden hour refers to the time of day when the sun is low in the sky just around sunrise or sunset. Taking wedding photos, and particularly portraits of the two of you around this time can give you golden, dramatic and much, much softer light.

HOW IS IT BETTER THAN OTHER TIMES OF THE DAY?

The most challenging time to shoot outdoors is when the sun is high in the sky or directly overhead. The light is really harsh, very strong and very unflattering in photos.

This is generally around midday, but the harsh light can last much later in the day, particularly around the summer months when the sun doesn’t set till around 8pm.

So please don’t schedule location photos for this time of the day.

If you have to do photos in the harsh midday sun, we would be looking for open shade and trees where the light will be softer and somewhat filtered.

HOW DO I PLAN THESE?

Google search what the sunset time is for your wedding day at your wedding location.

  • If the sun sets while you are inside the reception, plan to do some sunset photos 20 minutes prior to sunset.

  • Schedule those sunset photos with your venue and allocate the time on your run sheet.
